Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
is
a tool for the systematic evaluation of the environmental aspects of a product
or service system through all stages of its life cycle. LCA provides an
adequate instrument for environmental decision support. Life cycle assessment
has proven to be a valuable tool to document the environmental considerations
that need to be part of decision-making towards sustainability. A reliable
LCA performance is crucial to achieve a life-cycle economy.
Eco-design
(ED) corresponds
to a preventive approach addressing the relation between a product and the
environment since the design stage.
The two approaches
(LCA and ED) are therefore very complementary and can enable Thai and European
consumers to satisfy their needs with better performing products or services
that use fewer resources, cause less pollution and contribute better to
social progress. These approaches have the potential to significantly improve
the environmental performance and the customer safety for Thai electrical
and electronic equipments. However, they are not yet well applied by the
industry due notably to:
The target group for the Action is the Electrical and Electronics
Institute of Thailand (EEI). The action will more particularly be aimed
at 12 technicians within this Centre. The main activities proposed
under this Action are as follows:
The
total duration of the Action will be one year.
The specific
objective of the Action is to build the capacity of the Electrical and Electronics
Institute of Thailand to support Thai manufacturers of electrical and electronic
products for the application of life cycle analysis (LCA) and eco design
(ED). The Action will thereby contribute to the following broader overall
objectives:
(i)
Promote LCA and ED among Thai manufacturers of electrical
and electronic products
(ii)
Reduce the amounts of waste from electrical and electronic
products in
(iii)
Reduce the amounts of dangerous chemical substances contained
in electrical and electronic products manufactured in
(iv)
Increase the potential of Thai manufacturers of electrical
and electronic products to access to EU markets
