รศ.ดร.วี ระศักดิ์ อุดมกิจเดชา ผู้อำนวยการศูนย์เทคโนโลยีโลหะและวัสดุแห่งชาติ (เอ็มเทค) สำนักงานพัฒนาวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีแห่งชาติ (สวทช.) เปิดเผยว่า เอ็มเทคได้ร่วมกับคณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย และสถาบันไฟฟ้าและอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ จัดการแข่งขันออกแบบและสร้างหุ่นยนต์แห่งประเทศไทย ครั้งที่ 3 Robot Design Contest 2010, RDC2010 เพื่อพัฒนาบุคลากรทางด้านการออกแบบและสร้างกลไกสำหรับหุ่นยนต์ ส่งเสริมให้เยาวชนรู้จักทำงานเป็นทีม และเฟ้นหาทีมตัวแทนประเทศไทยไปร่วมแข่งขันในเวทีสร้างหุ่นยนต์ระดับโลก IDC RoBoCon 2010 ที่เมืองเซี่ยงไฮ้ ประเทศสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีน ในเดือนสิงหาคม 2553 ที่จะถึง โดยในปีนี้มีความพิเศษ คือได้เปิดรับนักศึกษาระดับอาชีวศึกษาเข้าร่วมแข่งขันเป็นครั้งแรก และยังมีการจัดอบรมภาคทฤษฎีและภาคปฏิบัติให้กับนักศึกษาทุกคนที่เข้าแข่งขัน เพื่อให้ความรู้ทางด้านการออกแบบและสร้างหุ่นยนต์ ส่วนรูปแบบการแข่งขันนั้น ทีมนักศึกษาคละสถาบันการศึกษาจะได้รับการอบรมเพื่อสร้างและออกแบบหุ่นยนต์ ตามโจทย์ที่กำหนด โดยจะกำหนดวัสดุและอุปกรณ์ที่ใช้สำหรับการออกแบบและสร้างหุ่นยนต์เพื่อแก้ ปัญหาโจทย์ที่กำหนดให้ ซึ่งปีนี้ได้กำหนดหัวข้อการแข่งขัน คือ Save the Beach หรือ "หุ่นยนต์รักษ์โลกสดใสชายหาด" โดยผู้เข้าแข่งขันแต่ละทีมออกแบบและสร้างหุ่นยนต์เพื่อจัดเก็บขยะในสนามแข่ง ขันที่ถูกจำลองเป็นชายหาด ซึ่งสนองการมีส่วนร่วมในการรักษาสิ่งแวดล้อม ทั้งนี้ การแข่งขันรอบแรกในวันที่ 26 เมษายน-14 พฤษภาคม ที่คณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ จุฬาฯ และรอบชิงชนะเลิศ วันที่ 15 พฤษภาคม ณ ลานศูนย์การค้าพันธุ์ทิพย์พลาซ่า ประตูน้ำ กทม. สอบถามเพิ่มเติมได้ที่โทร.0-2564-6500 ต่อ 4680
ด้าน รศ.ดร.บุญสม เลิศหิรัญวงศ์ คณบดีคณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ จุฬาฯ กล่าวว่า สำหรับการแข่งขัน IDC RoBoCon หรือ การแข่งขันออกแบบและสร้างหุ่นยนต์ในกลุ่มประเทศสมาชิก ได้แก่ จีน ญี่ปุ่น สหรัฐอเมริกา อังกฤษ ฝรั่งเศส เยอรมนี บราซิล เกาหลีใต้ และไทย มีมาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ.1999 โดยประเทศไทยเริ่มส่งทีมตัวแทนไปร่วมแข่งขันเมื่อปี ค.ศ.2007 เป็นต้นมา และสามารถคว้ารางวัลชนะเลิศมาได้ถึง 3 ปีซ้อน ในการแข่งขัน IDC RoBoCon 2007 ที่จัดขึ้นในประเทศไทย, IDC RoBoCon 2008 ที่บราซิล และ IDC RoBoCon 2009 ที่ญี่ปุ่น
